We touched down in Kingston Jamaica, it’s been 6 months in Mexico so was weird being back in an english speaking country. We grabbed an uber when we landed through kingston on a saturday night, Jerk chicken barrel bbqs all around the streets and systems blaring out reggae and dub, you could feel the subs through the car as we drove along. The next day we walked from north to south of kingston in about 2 hours, took a walk down Beat street and passed Rockers international record store but unfortunately everything was closed with it being a sunday. Some of the areas we walked through felt anxiety inducing as it was hectic, some of the locals warned us to be careful, but was cool to see some of the real kingston. One of the only places that was open was the National Gallery of Jamaica, we were introduced to a lot of art and history unbeknown to us. History of the taino people who were in Jamaica before the british brought over african slaves. A dark history that as someone who’s British it felt I should have known a lot more about beforehand.
Definitely an educational experience that has given me more perspective. Other than that we checked out the infamous Kingston dub club, upon entrance we we greeted with a table full of ganja, edibles, pre-rolls and bags of high grade and you could purchase it for as little as £1 a gram. Then when you walked down the steps upon this location overlooking kingston you felt the vibrations from the system. A little bar selling home-made fermented fruit wines and some ital goodies. We grabbed a few patties, a few wines, had a smoke and then danced to some dub for a few hours. No photos were allowed but instead of the poncy feeling I got from Sunday Sunday in Mexico, it felt more out of respect and to enjoy the tunes instead of trying to capture everything.
